It has been pretty evident that this is the “hump week” of the first term of the school year. The students are starting to get into the routines of school and are starting to ignore more and more assignment deadlines. I will attribute it to the steady workload that students are getting from all of their classes. It’s not even students who are feeling the heat…teachers are too. It’s not that they are missing deadlines, or not doing their jobs, facilitating learning in students in various disciplines, but are starting to get edgy.
Don’t get me wrong, all of the teachers that I work with are fantastic colleagues and I get along with all of them, but more and more teachers are starting to keep to themselves during the day, and can’t bother to be interrupted. I’m starting to feel it too! If they are at all feeling what I’m feeling this week, they are tired, and busier than ever. There just seems to be more stuff to do day after day!
I expect that after this week, things can only get better as the terms starts to come to a close in a few weeks. Or, the opposite could happen, it starts to speed up as teachers try to fit the rest of their curriculum in. I guess either could happen. I will just have to see.
I am really starting to get excited for next Friday when I head to the Melbourne zoo with one of my classes. I’ve really been thinking hard about what I want the students to do while they are exploring the vast amount of fauna from all around the world. I would really like to see that students understand the importance of zoos and their role in the community. I also want students to understand the impact they have on the scientific community. I’m also thinking that the students should take pictures while they are at the zoo to track their trip and to entice them to see as much as they can while they are there. At the same time, I would like them to learn as much as possible about the different animals but I want them to learn based on their own curiosity. The students should really drive their own assignment while at the zoo, but I keep having more and more ideas of how I want them to structure their understanding of their newly found knowledge. I guess I have to find out soon.
Tonight was bowls night but unfortunately with the past few days of rain, the even was canceled and postponed until next week. Oh well. The rain has really started to upset me, especially today! I did some laundry yesterday after school and set it out in the garage to dry over the next couple days but since it has been raining, it has really become humid here. I feel like my clothes will never dry at this rate. Thankfully I have some backup clothes!
